The EDHEC student fashion association Talons Aiguilles Mediterranee recently held the 2007 edition of the Young Designers Awards in the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, welcoming 500 avid fashion followers.
Talons Aiguilles Mediterranee (Mediterranean high heels) is the EDHEC student fashion association that promots young fashion designers and was originally established on the EDHEC campus in Lille. This novel idea was then taken up by the Nice campus in 1992, enhancing it with a certain Mediterranean flair. The highlight of the Talons Aiguilles Mediterranee calendar is the bestowing of the Young Designers Award which was held in Cannes on 7th January, 2007. The Association doesn't however purely aim to improve prospects for young designers, it was also founded with charitable purposes in mind. Most of the events held by Talons Aiguilles Mediterranee target helping charitable organisations and the Young Designers Trophy is no exception with the profits of this year's edition going to the Defi des Femmes, a charity that
helps women suffering from Breast cancer.
The Young Designers Trophy has grown and developed as an event in Nice. In Lille the event was merely a one night show. Here in Cannes it has evolved and been extended into a five day workshop which then culminates in a grand show in the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.
In order to take part in the Young Designers Trophy participants are asked to adhere to a number of strict guidelines. Candidates are selected based on a number of sketches which are sent to the Association. This initial stage leads to a selection of candidates who are then given a theme upon which they are expected to design their clothes for the final show. These final designs are then drawn up and created in front of the public in open workshops in the week preceding the show and eventually presented to the public in the award ceremony fashion show on the final day. The trophy is awarded to the candidate with the most original outfit while a second award is presented based on the spectators' votes.
This year eight young designers participated in the event, representing 4 different countries. France, Taiwan, Switzerland and Italy provided the young talent. There were 3 candidates from France, 2 from Taiwan, 1 from Switzerland and 2 from Italy.
The event was also graced with the presence of Ms Chesnel from the Conseil Regional des Alpes Maritimes who proved fundamental in the raising of funds and the financing of the event. Her input as well as other partners along with the EDHEC Business School proved invaluable in setting up and organising a both successful and entertaining event.
There are plans to increase the size and scope of the fashion show in the years to come. Many members of the Jury pledged their assistance in expanding the event and it is hoped that the show will eventually be on a par with such events as the Hyeres and Dinard designer trophy.
The Talons Aiguilles association however doesn't intend to rest on its laurels. It already has other ideas in the pipeline, one of which is a fashion show which intends to aid local fashion tradesmen in the centre of Nice. New tramway construction in the centre of Nice has disfigured the landscape and the association hopes to be able to organize a fashion show in order to resurrect the beauty of the Nice town centre.
