Specialised Seminars in Virtual Trading Room

NIKKI HARLE March 12, 2007
The trading room of the EDHEC Business School provides the ideal training simulation for real advanced-trading and information systems. Through the sponsored Fininfo platform they are connected on-line with the world markets and deal in real-time on a virtual trading floor. Students in the 2007 MSc Finance and MSc Risk & Asset Management programmes will benefit from a new specialised seminar given in the trading room.

This trading room is the fruit of the collaboration between the EDHEC Business School and Fininfo one of the leading company providers of trading platforms. The room has 12 computers where students can find in real-time data concerning the world markets, the presence of the trading room in the EDHEC campus renforces the capacities and tools of the finace department and gives students the opportunity to work in an envioronment similar to the one they could have in their professional career.

The Fininfo platform has three major functions all of which are available to students.

1)  Fininfo provides real-time access to all equity markets of the world, all commodities markets and also interest rate markets.

2)  It provides students with a financial database including many data for public companies such as balance sheets profits & loses accounts, ratios, information about dividends etc and therefore provides an excellent financial analysis tool.

3)  It provides information and financial data about bond issuers such as countries or companies, including the ratings of the issuer.

Users of the EDHEC trading room use exactly the same software and have the same information as professional traders and can even download historical data that can be useful for their projects and courses. The Transaction EDHEC Association (a students' association interested in stock exchange and trading platforms), organizes special courses and presentations of the trading platform for students interested in the subject. Moreover the association organizes in the trading room special events such the last one on the 30th of May with Mr Anthony Cros, financial investment adviser, former financial executive for Barclays Group LTD.

By  familiarising themselves with the Fininfo trading room, EDHEC students acquire IT skills that make them quickly operational in a trading position upon graduation.

Students also have full access to MATLAB software and its toolkits via the  Financial Modeling in Matlab/VBA Specialised Seminar.  Matlab is powerful industry standard software platform for financial modelling, commonly used in hedge funds and banks.

With this practical aproach to learning, students will find themselves well prepared for real-life situations and be able to add an impressive list of skills to their CV
