Master of Science in Strategic Management
You are here : MSc in Strategic Management > Description
EDHEC's MSc in Strategic Management is a resolutely hands-on programme with frequent team work and numerous group projects. This one-year programme gives a complete overview of the running of a company, as seen from the position of CEO and is ideal for those thinking of setting up their own business or who are interested in becoming consultants or working in the strategy cells of corporations.
With this in mind, the much-appreciated module Praxis Streams was designed to complement the theoretical part of the curriculum with practical experience in the field of strategic management. This module offers two different ways for students to get hands-on experience, either by working on an assignment for a real-life company or by undertaking a business creation of their own.
Professor Charles Lumbers, Programme Manager of EDHEC's MSc in Strategic Management and responsible for the Praxis Streams Module, elaborates on the concept of this applied project...
"I developed this course in order to provide the MSc students with the opportunity to learn from strategic problems and strategic development issues facing real companies"
We first select the companies that offer the most interesting strategic problems for the students to analyse. This year for example we have 9 very different companies; from world leaders to family-run businesses and which span a wide variety of sectors. The smaller firms generally lack in-house know-how to conduct the strategic analysis themselves while the bigger companies simply haven't yet had the time to free up resources. There are generally two types of project; one deals with strategic development and the question Where do we go from here? while the other deals with an idea that has been on the boil for a while but which has not yet been given full consideration. In both these cases EDHEC provides a real service to a real company and this is what makes the Praxis Streams project so successful.
In groups of three or four students are assigned to a company to conduct a strategic consulting mission, the aim being to provide them with the opportunity to apply existing knowledge and develop new skills in dealing with practical strategic assignments.
Each team has to apply the specific strategic-analysis models, learnt beforehand in the programme courses. This helps the students identify a particular business challenge and provide possible solutions. Each group familiarises itself with the company's field of activities; identifies its mission, values and core competencies. Parallel to that, the groups analyse the business environment, study competitors' activities, discern particular trends and forecast possible market changes, as required, to complete the project for their company "client".
During the project, the students meet several times with the company directors or senior development managers and benefit from on-going mentoring from EDHEC faculty. These professors act as consultants to the consultants and provide a delicate balance of guidance and freedom of decision.
At the end of the project, the students make a summary presentation and provide the company with a consultancy report, in which they present their findings and propose the necessary course of action.
This project allows the students to apply their theoretical knowledge and gain real experience in solving a strategic management problem. This interactive approach really is a win-win situation for both the companies and the students.
The students in the MSc in Strategic Management programme have always shown great interest in this module over the years and work enthusiastically on the different projects. Their sound strategic decisions are taken very seriously by the various companies who are often impressed with the professionalism of the teams. This strategic decision can even be the catalyst in taking the company to the next stage of its development.
Everyone benefits from this project says Professor Lumbers Students gain experience while the companies receive high-class consultancy reports - not to mention the advantages to the School that these strengthened company links bring.
Projects this year include:
Within the framework of the Praxis Streams module students may also choose to work on their own start-up project which can also be further developed as the subject of their end of studies Master Thesis. Students with entrepreneurial spirit then benefit from the expert advice from various faculty members and get the same mentoring as the students in the real-life company project. Pierre Gauthey, MSc in Strategic Management graduate of 2006 describes his experience and how he managed to set up his own award-winning business Petits-Fils ("Grandsons")
"
I came up with the idea of Petits-Fils while brainstorming with my friend who was a student in EDHEC's MSc in Finance. We came up with the idea of a company which could offer daily care, administrative help or made-to-measure assistance to elderly or home-bound people. By the end of the programme we were ready to set up the company. My role would be to concentrate on the strategy while my partner would deal with the financial side.
Because of the entrepreneurial aspect of the MSc in Strategic Management and the mentoring I received from EDHEC professors, I felt ready to undertake the setting up of the company. I felt I understood the problems a CEO could face and I already had a good general insight into the everyday running of a company. I finalised my business plan for Petits-Fils in my Masters Thesis and today, I'm proud to say that we are doing well. We now have about a hundred clients and have about 30 different people working with us. We're even thinking of expanding from the Paris region to the South of France!
The MSc in Strategic Management is a great programme if you want to set up your own company or you want to work in consulting. The courses are all studied from the viewpoint of a CEO which means that you really get the global vision of the running of a company. It's like you are looking down from above, seeing how the whole company functions and everything you learn has a strategic approach."
